Banning Glyphosate Outright Could Be Counter Productive

Roundup herbicide should be banned in and around areas where children play and from the food they eat

Monday, September 30, 2019 - Many articles have recently been written about how one municipality after another in environmentally-conscious states like California and Florida are banning the use of glyphosate without giving too much consideration to the chemical that will potentially replace it. Even countries such as Europe's France and Germany have announced their intentions to ban glyphosate throughout their territories. Chances are, however, that whatever alternative to glyphosate is adopted, it could prove to be a greater threat to human health than glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup herbicide. Also, a total ban on glyphosate could have a disruptive effect on the world's food supply. Governments may be going too far too fast in choosing to completely eliminate the use of Roundup herbicide. A more effective approach may be if municipalities stop using glyphosate to control weeds around government buildings and also around public utilities like telephone poles and telephone wires where it is currently used. These weeds and obstructive plants can be removed with manual labor. Roundup weedkiller and all other chemical herbicides should be banned, in and around public schools and school playgrounds and also banned in public parks. Most municipalities already take the precaution of waiting until there are no students on the grounds to spray weedkiller herbicides and the groundskeepers are required to wear full protective body suits and oxygen respirators. Most administrators chose not to ban using weedkillers and have the opinion that herbicides are only dangerous to human health until they are dry or otherwise absorbed into the plant and soil. Nonetheless, I sure wouldn't want my child rolling around in the grass and dirt where glyphosate had been sprayed a day or two before. To me, it seems like a no-brainer to stop spraying chemical weedkillers wherever children learn or play.

The other area of concern for overuse of Roundup herbicide is the massive and ever-increasing spraying of the chemical on the crops that go into the food that we eat. Scientists are finding glyphosate in the urine of those tested in increasing quantities year after year. While the levels of glyphosate found in adults are currently within the limits set by the US Food and Drug Administration, the levels of glyphosate found in the foods that children eat exceed that amount. This summer, the New York Post published an article titled "Children’s cereals contain ‘troubling’ levels of a carcinogen found in Roundup." Researchers have identified dozens of children's breakfast bars and cereals that contain high levels of glyphosate. The article cites the Environmental Working Group study that found that "Cheerios brands Honey Nut, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Oat Crunch and Multi-Grain, and twenty-one oat-based cereal and snack products — also including several from the Nature Valley line" contained dangerously high levels of glyphosate, a chemical that has been labeled "probably carcinogenic to humans" by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, a division of the World Health Organization, in Lyon France.

What is needed is a moratorium on any increases in the uses of glyphosate and a modified ban by municipalities and state governments. We need to keep glyphosate away from the places children play and the foods that they eat.
