The Trump Administration Stands Behind The EPA's Glyphosate Safety Announcement.

The International Agency For Research on Cancer (IARC) and others that claim glyphosate is probably carcinogenic must have it all wrong

Wednesday, May 8, 2019 - The pendulum has swung and overcorrected in the other direction regarding the attitude of the US government in protecting the health and well-being of the American people. It is a well-known fact that the US has a businessman in the White House, one who is on record as striving to bring back jobs and to reduce financially costly and burdensome environmental protection regulations in favor of increasing company profits. The current White House is firmly in favor of supporting the EPA statement regarding the safety of glyphosate.

The other day the Environmental Protection Agency came out with a statement that claims that they have reviewed all available scientific evidence regarding glyphosate, the active ingredient in Monsanto's Roundup herbicide, and have concluded that it does not cause cancer. The timing of such a statement was suspect as it comes at a time that the third glyphosate trial was coming to a conclusion and about to be given to the jury for deliberations.

The plaintiff's attorneys have slammed the EPA's announcement and have called the credibility and timing of the EPA's statement a deliberate act to protect the agrochemical giant. According to US Right to Know "The Hakluyt communications with Monsanto speak directly to the credibility of the 2019 EPA glyphosate evaluation, issued by an administration which holds itself out as favoring Monsanto's business interests, at that the advisory firm Hakluyt reported to Monsanto the following: A domestic policy adviser at the White House said, "We have Monsanto's back on pesticides regulation. We are prepared to go toe-to-toe on any disputes they may have with, for example, the EU. Monsanto need not fear any additional regulation from this administration." The trial which is slated to conclude this week pits a husband and wife in their late 70s as plaintiffs against Monsanto claiming that the couple's decades-long use of Monsanto's Roundup herbicide caused their non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, a rare and deadly form of cancer. The plaintiffs' attorneys argued that the chances were astronomically slim that two people could simultaneously contract such a rare disease, while on the other hand, the defense countered by saying that the plaintiffs' immune systems had been compromised by a lifetime of other diseases including cancer as well as other medical conditions.

Unfortunately, the EPA's statement, while having the full support of the current occupants of the White House in Washington, did not mention the fact that it is not glyphosate alone that is being called into question. What is being looked at is the fact that glyphosate, when mixed with other chemicals including surfactants in the Roundup herbicide cocktail become carcinogenic when it comes into direct skin contact regularly and over a long period of time such as may be the case with occupational users of the herbicide such as farmers, maintenance workers, landscapers and homeowners, and family gardeners. Two out or two juries unanimously concluded in favor of the plaintiffs that alleged that such skin contact caused "dermal absorption" that "substantially contributed" to their non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The plaintiffs alleged that Monsanto was negligent in not warning occupational users to wear protective waterproof clothing when using the chemical.
